Arthur was in isolation at a hospital for over two years. His son Donald recalls visiting him during that time. Arthur had to "holler down" from above to talk with his son. Once Arthur returned home, Donald was advised not to kiss his father, or drink from the same cup, for fear of contracting tuberculosis.

His son Donald recalls riding with his father while on duty and he would speak to people on the street. They would call him "sugar."

Arthur was a Detroit policeman for many years. He went on a police raid once. One of the men recognized him and broke his jaw. Years later while on duty in a bad rain, he got pneumonia and had to get a different job.
