"According to family legend, Peter's mother died in childbirth, or shortly thereafter. Peter was raised by another family (his step-mother, Appolonia?? -- Peter was living with Johann & Appolonia as of the 1870 and 1880 Federal census). Peter had health problems (colic), and when he was unable to keep anything down, the doctor is said to have told the family to give him hard cider. The "cure" apparently worked, and Peter lived to the age of 98."
