Notes:
Edgar S. Schneider
Died Sept. 17, 2005
Edgar S. Schneider said his final good-bye on Sept. 17. Ed was born May 15, 1921 in Detroit, to Peter and Elizabeth (Gross) Schneider. He attended Burton High School in Roseville, and graduated with the Ludington High School Class of 1946 following his military service overseas. Ed served in the 11th Armored Division of the United States Army under Gen. Patton's third Army from November 1942 until November 21, 1945. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in August of 1943 and was with Colonel Foy and his troops at the closing of the Belgium Gap at Houffalize, Belgium in January 1945.
On July 20, 1946 Ed married Rita Jean Peters at St. Simon Catholic Church in Ludington, and she survives.
Ed excelled in everything he did. He began as a millwright after WW II and later returned to this profession until his retirement in 1985. In between, he was a car salesman for W.E. Stevenson and worked for Ebasco Engineering during the construction of the Ludington Pumped Storage Project, one of his most rewarding jobs.
In 1988, Ed was inducted into the Mason County Softball Hall of Fame as a former player, manager, and contributor.
Ed was adventurous, making his first trip to California hitchhiking and hopping trains at the age of 15. In 1942 he returned to California, following Route 66. His love for the back roads of travel, especially in the western states, never stopped. Ed and Rita always looked forward to getting on the road again.
Ed was a life long member of the Edwin H. Ewing Post 76 American Legion, and he belonged to the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. He was a faithful Tigers baseball follower.
In addition to his wife Rita, Ed is survived by six children, Janet (Richard) Schab, Alan (Cindy) Schneider, Mike (Sue) Schneider, Jean (Dennis) Mazur, Bill (Debbie) Schneider, and Marcia Boston. He leaves behind 14 grandchildren, Staci (Chad) Carter, Ben and Paul Schneider, Kraig, Kendall, and Courtney Schneider and Elyssa (Joe) Chmelar, David Gouin, Jeramy, Tommy, Brent, and Brooke Schneider, Sara and Amy Engfer. Ed also has four great-grandchildren, Dylan, Braden, Kaitlyn, and Ashley, and another due in February, 2006. Ed has one surviving brother, Jack (Ruby) Schneider; two sisters, June (John) Carney, and Freda Felan; two sisters-in-law, Virginia and Marilyn; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Roy (his wife and five children), and brothers Daniel, Chester, Wayne, and Norman (and wife Ruth); and a grandson, Roger Gouin.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 12 p.m. at St. Simon Catholic Church with the Rev. Ken Schichtel, celebrant. Visitation will be on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at the Alexander-Rye Funeral Home from 9:30 until 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Pere Marquette Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Simon\'s Education Fund, Pere Marquette Cemetery Fund, or a charity of choice.
To know Ed was to like him...
