Obituary: 2021
artin Eugene Hanhauser, Sr. DANIEL ISLAND - Martin Eugene Hanhauser, Sr., 71, of Daniel Island, South Carolina, entered eternal rest on September 9, 2021, surrounded by his beloved family. He fought a courageous fight until the very end and never complained about his battle with Parkinson's Disease. Martin was born on June 12, 1950, in Erie, Pennsylvania, to the late Frederick "Fritz" B. Hanhauser and Ruth (Weber) Hanhauser. He enthusiastically embraced his role as the middle child, which shaped his fun-loving personality and intense love for his family. His siblings, Mariette (Bruce) McCarthy, Fred (Anne) Hanhauser, Anne Hanhauser and John (Evelyn) Hanhauser all remember him fondly as their favorite sibling. His mother used to say, "I love all of my children, but Mart just has a zest for life! He just enjoys life so much that is it wonderful being around him! He just makes me feel good." One of his brothers shared that "Mart was my first and only best friend. It was just luck that I had him as a brother, he would have been my best friend even if he was not." In his youth, Martin was known for fierce sports rivalries with his friends and siblings, from kickball at recess to the high school football and baseball fields. Martin was a graduate of St. Luke School and Cathedral Preparatory High School in Erie and a 1972 graduate of the Pennsylvania State University where he was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. Martin married the love of his life, Catherine, on April 8, 1972. He was extremely proud of their ultimate life's work - the children they raised, their spouses and his six grandchildren. Their goal of raising loving, hardworking, successful children was their greatest accomplishment. Marty was actively involved in his children's schools and sports, doing everything from coaching to hosting Saturday morning waffle parties. His children's friends fondly remember his kindness and welcoming nature. He enjoyed frequently picking up his kids and all of their friends at 2 AM in State College and warmly welcomed everyone into their home. Goompa was always on the sidelines at his grandchildren's events and was their biggest fan. He was the best Goompa ever, willing to spend entire days in his golf cart on endless playground tours on Daniel Island. Martin was all of his friends' best friend, yet he was so humble he likely didn't realize it. He was known by those who loved him as Meat Head, Meat, Big Marty, Goompa, Goomps, Boompa, Sly, Apple Cheeked Doll Baby, and The Light of the World. He was always the last one to leave a party, making sure he talked to everyone, making everyone feel welcome and like they were the most important person in the room. He never failed to bring a smile to everyone's face. Marty was bigger than life with his contagious laugh and smiling eyes. He was the kindest, sweetest man you could ever meet. He was known for delivering heartfelt, kind words about the people he loved at any celebration and inevitably breaking into tears of happiness. He was one of the very best and everyone who knew him was better off for it. Martin is survived by his wife of 50 years, Catherine Joy (Stankovich) Hanhauser; his children, Jerilyn & Dennis Deitch, Martin & Erin (Smigocki) Hanhauser and Andrew & Lisa (Chiarelli) Hanhauser; his grandchildren, Caitlin, Ella & Jack Deitch, Andrew "AJ" & Lucy Hanhauser, and Quinn Hanhauser. Catholic funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 18, at 11:00 AM at the Church of the Holy Cross on Daniel Island. A celebration of Martin's life will be held following the mass. Martin truly felt that no gathering was complete without good food and great company. Martin would want his family and friends to only cry tears of joy and engage in laughter at his many memories. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to either of Martin's favorite charities. Tunnels to Towers https://t2t.org or The Society of the Little Flower The Tunnel to Towers Foundation honors the sacrifice of firefighter, Stephen Siller, who laid down his life to save others on September 11, 2001. Stephen lived by the words "while we have time, let us do good" which is exactly how Martin lived every day. Visit our guestbook at legacy.com/obituaries/charleston
